Teacher Education (MAT, MED) The Teacher Education program at UNH Manchester is committed to preparing teachers for culturally, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse schools. Manchester (pop. 108,000) has a long history as an immigrant city and that continues to this day as witnessed by the city's vibrant immigrant and refugee population. Our partnership schools are the most diverse in the state and over 70 different languages are spoken in the school district. UNH teacher education students have numerous opportunities to complete practica, projects, and internships in diverse urban classrooms and schools. Issues related to the challenges and rewards of serving in diverse schools are woven into all of the teacher preparation courses. Students also have numerous opportunities to participate in and contribute to the professional knowledge base through public conference presentations, organizing community panels, and/or organizing after school professional development sessions for colleagues at public schools. Master of Education and Master of Arts in Teaching The professional education unit at the University of New Hampshire seeks to prepare beginning teachers who demonstrate excellence in classroom practice and who will become educational leaders. There are two programs to achieve these ends: the five-year program in which students begin preparation for teaching at the undergraduate level and the post-baccalaureate program in which students enter the program at the graduate level. In the five-year program students complete a baccalaureate degree outside of education and move into a fifth year of study and full-year internship which lead to either the M.Ed. or M.A.T. degree and licensure for teaching. The M.A.T. and M.Ed. programs offered at Manchester lead to N.H. teacher certification in elementary education; secondary education in English, social studies; and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). For more information, visit their programs of study page for Education and be sure to visit the department's website. Master of Education in Teacher Leadership The M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership is for experienced teachers who wish to improve their background for excellence in teaching and who wish to enhance their ability to take active leadership roles in their schools, community and profession. This program may be completed in one to two years of full-time study or over a period of six years on a part-time basis. Admitted students usually have three or more years of teaching experience. The program provides a context in which teachers can build upon their classroom experiences as teachers and learners; expand their understanding of the roles of teachers in schools; develop tools of inquiry that enable them to investigate questions about teaching, learning and school reform; inspire others to work toward institutional change; and collaborate effectively with other teachers, administrators, and parents in ways that move the teaching profession forward. Students must complete a minimum of eight four-credit courses, of which three are a required core. Students use the remaining five classes to develop a focus or concentration of particular interest. In the past students have used the concentration to add another area of certification (e.g., ESOL) to their credentials. For a more complete list of requirements click here. |
